Affordances
The features and affordances of the iPad are central to its potential to enhance learning inside and outside of the classroom. The iPad is not a laptop and should not be expected to replace computers but instead serve to compliment them. This part of our tutorial will look at three key affordances as intrinsic benefits to the iPad’s native design that can be leveraged to enhance student learning.
1. Portability and Mobility
The iPad is light, easy to carry, and allows users ten hours of battery life without a need to recharge. Users are no longer restricted to sit at designated areas to access and create content. Perhaps the most powerful feature here is the camera which enables students to take pictures, record audio, and shoot video in a variety of settings across time and space.

2. Touchscreen capabilities
The iPad screen can be manipulated through touch. People of all ages and abilities intuitively grasp how to operate iPads through using their fingers to perform a variety of multi-touch gestures that increase usability and interactiveness.

3. Content Creation
The operating system of iPads, known as iOS, enables content created in one app to be transferred and enhanced through others more easily. Commonly referred to as “app smashing”, the iPad’s operating system affords the user a creative workflow with an added layer of problem solving that is enabled through a greater connectivity between apps. This empowers students to become content creators rather than passive consumers through active consumption, curation, problem solving, and creativity.
